Shapinsay The terrain is a familiar sight, with straight roads and lush green fields in a uniform ‘grid’ pattern - however this is highly unusual for Orkney. A 19th Century Laird, David Balfour, imposed this system onto the island to increase agricultural production, and his legacy dominates the landscape to this day.
Shapinsay is a low lying green island with fertile soil, only 6 miles at its longest point. This is an island of rolling green fields, once thought to be the place of banishment for witches and thieves - now home to cattle and sheep grazing on lush grass. Shapinsay is a place for relaxation, contemplation and for looking out across the Orkney Isles and beyond - a simple reminder that there is whole new world to explore out there……. |
